Yesterday it was elections’ day for Europe. My initial thought was not to vote as I am quite uncertain as to what to vote. But then a friend talked me into this as he said that if you don’t vote, your voice is not heard at all. I knew that of course. All my adult life I was pro voting as I believe that all my ancestors have made a great effort for me to have this privilege.
The problem is that I don’t know what to vote for. I strongly believe that democracy is very important, but I can’t help but ask myself: even if my country has “democracy”, is it really so? I think that the media in my country are more or less driven by the current government therefore they sell us a specific story. That everything goes well. Well it doesn’t. Since the middle class family is not able to have a proper meal on the table, then something is wrong. Even though our fiscal rates and macro-economy seem fine and blooming. During the years of crisis for Greece, the majority of young working force left to work abroad. Most of those people are still working abroad. Is this blooming economy? Our government has decided instead of increasing the salaries – at least to the EU average – to give allowances to the people in need. Is this good politics?
On the other hand, is there a political party worth voting for? In my opinion, unfortunately, not. And even if someone good and ethical enters politics, he becomes corrupt. It goes with the business. Unfortunately, there is no innocent sheep in our parliament. So, the best thing I see that we can do is fight our little fights. Go to protests, help those in need, write down your thoughts and share them, do your best to not harm the environment, vote. After all, my ancestors fought for democracy – so should I.
