No, I do not think that governments would allow cryptocurrencies to fully replace their own fiat currencies.

Fiat currencies and monetary policy are one of the main tools that governments have to control the economy. It can be used to help stimulate the economy and prevent recession. Or as we have recently seen after the 2008 crisis, it can be used to help bail-out sectors of the economy from overwhelming debt.

As such it is unlikely that governments would allow cryptocurrencies to replace the fiat currencies over which they have control. Governments have numerous methods to prevent such a takeover, for example regulation, restrictions on using cryptocurrencies to pay wages, harsher taxation or simply making use of cryptocurrencies illegal.

As an alternative governments may issue their own cryptocurrencies and "compete away" the existing crypto.

That said, it is quite possible that a cryptocurrency becomes a significant world currency, possibly even one of the major world currencies. As long as it does not take over too high a percentage of use in each country cryptocurrencies could co-exist with fiat currencies.

I believe that Crypto has a big role to play in disrupting existing businesses, reducing transaction costs, driving out middlemen, breaking down barriers between countries and rewarding individuals fairly for their own work and data. To achieve these goals it does not need to replace fiat currency, it just needs to obtain a sufficient level of adoption and infrastructure. For me, this use as an alternative and disruptor is the goal. The replacement of fiat is unnecessary.
