For me, the top three Steem dApps which excite me are those which I believe have the most potential. These are (in no particular order):
- Utopian
There is huge potential in open source software development. Microsoft recently purchased Github for $7.5bn. Many websites and projects that you see around the world are actually open source developments or based on open source software.
Utopian adds a new element to open source development. It brings together the disperse communities of open source workers, allowing project owners to find developers, graphic designers, analysts, translators and marketers to contribute to their projects. On top of this, Utopian rewards the best contributions, bring some additional incentives and support to open source projects.
Utopian could result in large investments into Steem from large project owners looking to support and reward their own projects. It also brings developers to the Steem network, who may decide to build on our infrastructure. There's plenty of win-win here and lots of potential.
- Oracle-D
Oracle-D has a similar direction-of-travel to Utopian. But rather than focusing on open source software development, it widens the net to all professional creators.
Oracle-D brings companies and clients to the Steem blockchain, bringing with them investments of Steem Power. The professional creators of the Steem community engage with the companies, learning about them and ultimately producing content on behalf of these clients. The clients benefit from this content as well as the building of a new community. There's also the potential for their Steem Power investment to grow.
No other blockchain has the size of community and the content creators necessary to launch this kind of offering.
- Musing
Musing is the first of the Steem dApps that offers the real potential to disrupt an existing large competitor. Quora was recently valued at $1.8bn and raised another $80m in capital. But Musing arguably has a better business model, since it also rewards its contributors.
Whilst many Steem dApps are competing against the behemoths of social networking, with little chance of matching the top rewards available, Musing already offers more rewards than its competition, putting it in a strong position.
Of all the Steem dApps, Musing also has the best potential for mass adoption. The smaller rewards allow larger numbers of contributors to become quickly engaged, with easier entry to the Steem economy for new Steem users. When HF20 is implemented, Musing could even start taking on new contributors directly.
Disruption of existing competition and decentralisation of profits to individuals around the world are central tenets of blockchain technology. Musing could be the first Steem dApp to succeed in putting these in to practice.
