Investment banks actually perform a wide range of services. Everything from issuing new securities or debt to raise capital, mergers and acquisitions, creating new market instruments, acting as market makers, derivative trading, organising financing of projects, or managing investment funds.

Really it's a collection of quite different tasks and skills. Each will be remunerated differently.
