There are arguments both for and against having SBD pegged to $1. The main reasons are:

For:

  • Stability: A stable SBD would be a useful tool for entrepreneurs on the Steem blockchain. A business taking payment in SBD but paying staff or suppliers based on the fiat USD price would currently be taking on a large currency risk due to the volatility of the SBD price. A coin with stability in relation to USD would give additional incentive for investors to start businesses on the Steem blockchain.
  • Simplicity: The Steem economics system is complex, particularly for new users. Having SBD pegged to $1 is easier to explain than having two floating currencies (Steem and SBD) as well as different versions of Steem (liquid and powered up).
  • Stablecoin value: Stablecoins have attractiveness in themselves, since they would giving Steem users a backstop against falling crypto prices. This could also be attractive to other market users. However in my view this argument is not strong as the current 3-day price exchange for SBD to Steem means SBD could not act as s useful stablecoin unless it were fundamentally re-designed.

Against:

  • Higher payouts: A SBD price above $1USD increases payouts (since payouts can be paid 50/50 SBD/SP). This attracts more users and provides existing users with greater rewards.

Various methods have been proposed to bring the SBD price to $1USD:

  • Wait: This approach assumes SBD will naturally return to $1USD over time. This seems to be being borne out over 2018, although the path for return is slow and may reverse in the next bull market.
  • Peg: Currently SBD has a one-way-peg with 1 SBD being convertible to $1USD worth of Steem (over 3 days). The "peg" option would also allow the reverse transaction which would swiftly bring SBD back to $1USD.
  • Burn: SBD is exchanged for Steem which is then burned. The aim of this method is to reduce the overall reward payouts, but it also acts to reduce the SBD price through supply of SBD for sale.

My view is that we don't need to make SBD worth $1USD. For me, higher rewards (particularly for new users) and attracting new users is the strongest argument. However there have been strong cases made both for and against and the debate is by no means clear cut.
