There are already at least two popular Steem mobile apps.
The original Steem mobile app, eSteem, has been in existence for over two years now but still has new development and new features being added. It's the more popular of the two main mobile apps, with over 10,000 users per month and it now also has the steem surfer website version for users that want the complete suite of tools.
Now there is also Partiko, a relative newcomer but already close to 1,000 users per month and getting lots of great feedback. It has both Android and iOS versions and a website is also currently being built.
As such, for me at least, a mobile app produced by Steemit is a low priority. I would much rather the central Steem team focus on SMTs and Communities. There are plenty of external developers who can work on mobile apps and the competition between them should drive great products. However only the central Steem team are really able to work on SMTs and Communities and these developments are key to Steem development.
In summary, I think the mobile app issue is already in good hands. Steemit should focus on the core development instead.
