Next May 28, 2023, will be the official opening of Sambil La Candelaria, a shopping mall with a long and strange history that you will learn about if you keep reading.
Sambil La Candelaria is located in the parish of La Candelaria, in front of Urdaneta Avenue to the north and two blocks east of Plaza La Candelaria, Caracas, Venezuela. It is a shopping center located about 6 blocks from my residence. It was opened to the public in November 2022, however, its official inauguration will occur at the end of this month of May 2023.
The construction of the structure of this mall was completed more than 10 years ago, however, during the presidency of Hugo Chávez, this building was expropriated for political reasons. It is implausible and unreal, but here, in this country, many strange things happen.
What happened to this building in the last 10 years, I will tell you: First it was a center for refugees, then it became a warehouse for goods and artifacts of government programs and finally, after negotiations between the owners of the building and the government, the building was returned to the construction company Sambil, at the beginning of the year 2022.
Constructora Sambil is the company in charge of the construction of all the Sambil Shopping Centers that are spread throughout the country: Caracas, Valencia, Margarita, Barquisimeto, San Cristobal, Maracaibo and Paraguaná. By the way, I know all those malls except for Sambil Maracaibo.
And I have learned that there are also Sambil Centers in Spain, Dominican Republic and Curacao. Definitely Mr. Salomon Cohen, president of Constructora Sambil, is a visionary as far as shopping centers are concerned.
Well, once the building was returned by the government. Constructora Sambil started the recovery works of the facilities. I think it was hard work, because for many years I was sad to see how such an imposing building was deteriorating.
I was amazed at how beautiful the inside of the mall is. From the outside it looks like a block of orange bricks with strange colorful geometric patterns on the corners. But I'm not going to criticize the art, especially me, who has a hard time understanding the color palette.
The interior design of the mall, I felt like an oval, the shops are located around the circumference of the oval. Its aisles are wide, with white painted walls and high ceilings, giving it a feeling of spaciousness and roominess. Many lights embedded in the dry wall ceiling give more light to the place.
There are elevators at one end of the mall and escalators on both sides of the oval shape. The first floor spaces and the food fair are fully occupied. The other levels are still in the process of being sold, so these areas were empty.
I loved the concept of the food fair. It has furniture at various points and lots of tables. There is a VIP area with a bar, and ornamental plants abound. Simply beautiful. I liked it so much that I have considered going back to the food fair, just to enjoy the space and design.
It has 4 levels of parking, recreational space for children, supermarket, pharmacy. The only thing I didn't see was a movie theater. I hope it will be inaugurated soon.

El próximo 28 de mayo de 2023, se realizará la inauguración oficial del Sambil La Candelaria, un centro comercial con una larga y extraña historia de la que te enterarás si sigues leyendo.
Sambil La Candelaria está ubicada en la parroquia La Candelaria, frente a la avenida Urdaneta por el norte y a dos cuadras al este de la plaza la Candelaria, Caracas, Venezuela. Es un centro comercial que está ubicado a unas 6 cuadras de mi residencia. Fue abierto al público en noviembre de 2022, sin embargo, su inauguración oficial ocurrirá a finales de este mes de mayo 2023.
La construcción de la estructura de este centro comercial culminó hace más de 10 años, sin embargo, durante la presidencia de Hugo Chávez, esta edificación fue expropiada, por argumentos políticos. Si es inverosímil e irreal, pero aquí, en este país, pasan muchas cosas extrañas.
¿Qué ocurrió con esta edificación en los últimos 10 años?, ya te cuento: Primero fue un centro de refugiados damnificados, luego pasó a ser depósitos de bienes y artefactos de programas gubernamentales y finalmente, luego de negociaciones entre los dueños de la edificación y el gobierno, fue devuelta la edificación, a la constructora Sambil, a principios del año 2022.
Constructora Sambil es la empresa encargada de la construcción de todos los Centros Comerciales Sambil que están esparcidos en el país: Caracas, Valencia, Margarita, Barquisimeto, San Cristóbal, Maracaibo y Paraguaná. Por cierto, conozco todos esos centros comerciales a excepción del Sambil Maracaibo.
Y me he enterado que también existen Centros Sambil en España, Republica Dominicana y Curazao. Definitivamente el Sr. Salomón Cohen, presidente de Constructora Sambil, es todo un visionario en cuanto a Centros Comerciales se refiere.
Pues bien, una vez fue devuelta, por parte del gobierno, la edificación. Constructora Sambil, inició los trabajos de recuperación de las instalaciones. Creo que fue un trabajo arduo, pues durante muchos años veía con tristeza como una edificación tan imponente se iba deteriorando.
Quedé sorprendida de lo lindo que es el centro comercial por dentro. Desde afuera parece un bloque de ladrillos color naranja con unos extraños dibujos geométricos de colores en sus esquinas. Pero no voy a criticar el arte, sobre todo a mi, que me cuesta entender la paleta de colores.
El diseño interior del centro comercial, se me antojo como un ovalo, los locales comerciales están ubicados a en toda la circunferencia de ovalo. Sus pasillos son amplios, con paredes pintadas de blanco y techos elevados, le dan sensación de amplitud y espacio. Muchas luces embutidas en el techo de dry wall dan mas luz al lugar.
Cuenta con ascensores en un extremo del centro comercial y escaleras mecánicas en dispuestas diametralmente a ambos lados de la forma de ovalo. Se encuentran totalmente ocupados los espacios de planta baja y la feria de comida. Los otros niveles todavía están en proceso de venta de locales, por lo que estas áreas estaban vacías.
El concepto de la feria de comida me encantó. Tiene muebles en varios puntos y muchas mesas. Hay una zona VIP con un bar, y abundan las plantas ornamentales. Simplemente hermoso. Me gustó tanto que he considerado la idea de volver a la feria de comida, solo para disfrutar del espacio y el diseño.
Tiene 4 niveles de estacionamiento, espacio recreativo para niños, supermercado, farmacia. Lo único que no vi, fue un cine. Espero lo inauguren pronto.
