Families can function as a voluntary commune because they are smaller, and the problems are fewer. When a man and woman, or whomever, volunteer into a union, marriage, partnership, or cooperative agreement, there can be one or more breadwinners. The resources may get split evenly or unevenly depending on the circumstances and expectations of all parties involved. And as long as the parties continue to volunteer and agree to the way resources are split, it is good. If things go grossly wrong, for example, if John becomes a gambling maniac and Sally feels threatened by the loansharks always coming to her door, she might choose to leave this union. At least in this instance, Sally has a choice.
