The knowledge problem is different than what it sounds like upon first hearing it. To be honest, I've only just learned of it and it makes a whole lot of sense as to why previous attempts at communism have failed. The guy in the video I linked up conducts a thought experiment with some young libertarians to try and figure out "without market prices" how to allocate resources and to whom. It's surprisingly difficult to do this intelligently in comparison to how the free market does it.
The free market is almost like crowd wisdom happening on autopilot and is comprised of billions of decisions that people make everyday. We totally take it for granted because we can’t accurately imagine a world where the free market doesn't exist. But when you throw central planning into the mix it acts like a monkey wrench going into the gears of everything we take for granted.
So they go into the endeavor of, yeah this should work, it’ll be great. But then when it doesn’t work, people are the problem. And people start to target each other for elimination "for the good of the many", of course.. It’s some deep stuff, maybe you’d be interested.
I think though if you are highly honest with yourself about the knowledge problem it’s something that would need to be solved in order for any sort of communist system to work. The closest I can think of to solve the problem would be with AI and TBH that’s sketchy at best and I don’t think it would beat out the wisdom of the crowd where people en masse pursue their own self-interest, voluntarily, one deal at a time.
The video sounds like a good an honest debate
so far with no trolling so that's kind of cool that
you're both willing to hear each other out.
P.S. The best analogy I can think of to explain it is like the air that's all around us, there's plenty enough for everyone to breathe so we can't imagine an environment without it. That is, until we're in the upper atmosphere, maybe a mountain top where the air is thinner, or if one is dying from emphysema. Only than can an individual realize what they may have taken for granted all those years. I believe that advocates of communism want what it has to offer but fail to realize what it is lacking, the ramifications of what happens when we try and blindly lead a country without market prices, and the great wisdom of the many who collectively created those market prices in the pursuit of their own self interest.
