The winter gasp
Those women in black clothes waiting for confirmations of war, those women dressed in black cloth murmuring crises and plagues, the stepmothers, the others, the snarling women. Those people piling into the dying man's room, those women washing his body with a damp cloth as if it makes a difference now, now that his body has created those yellowish sores that smell like the end of life. The men don't even enter the house, they keep trying to keep busy outside.
The matron spends her days in mournful prayer, praying to figures that are no longer even there, the saint had been cut out of the painting with seamstress scissors, but she didn't even notice, she just goes on praying with her eyes glassy and ragged, her skin looks like origami paper, or a crumpled page of the Bible, with that translucent texture and its whiteness mixes with watery tears that recover their stock in a few hours when in occasional bursts she convulses on the floor in mercy for justice.
In the last room of the house only the strongest enter, the body has already started to leave this enclosure and not even the priest wanted to participate, he excused himself and left early claiming an important meeting at the shrine.
The eldest daughter watches the body on the bed and tries to fix that scene in her memory, the scene in sepia tones, the scene in shades of contrast, someone hearing the poor man's dying gasp opens the window so that his soul can receive a last breath of wind from the beach, the near-dead man's eyes shine in the light that comes in and his gurgle of asphyxiation turns into a thin, soft sigh that makes him look like he is deflating like a party balloon. And before you can even make sense of that whole palette of colors and events, it stiffens, relaxes, and is gone. Only the eldest daughter and the maid have seen that last moment. She, all in black, frozen in the doorway, realizes that her father's soul leaves before the shadows that had been lurking in the corner of the room. But they come out soon after, like spiders that climb quickly up the right foot of the huge and cold house, until they disappear through the crimson-colored ceiling.
There will be mourning and procession, weeping and candles, singing and fighting, dissociation and despair, it will be a long period of suffering, where the windows of the sea do not open, where the rooms hold the smell of slimy, heavy memory. It will take years before the matron can make bread again and smile with some good news brought by her children or grandchildren, but for obvious reasons, she will live each day. And each day she will live it too, facing each other and waiting for a better moment.
