Many times I have gotten into (healthy) discussions with my girlfriend about art. This is because she is an appreciator of contemporary art (a name/concept that embraces many categories and this makes it more difficult to specify my problem) and also appreciates all art of all times. I have a serious difficulty in giving value to certain types of things that call art and it is very complex to judge the work of others, so above all I always need to reinforce that it is MY opinion and I know very well that it has no validity for the world around me. The point is that in general I find these types of art (which I will be exemplifying here in images) seems to me very pretentious in assuming that the "innovation or daring" of doing something so minimalist or banal is as powerful or valid in terms of "art" as a statue carved in marble or an oil painting from past centuries (or even a current painting, it has nothing to do with the time, but with the style and supposed categorization).

Is that art? Maybe

A few days ago we were talking about whether art is primarily (or mainly) in the eye of the beholder or in the eye of the maker? Because if it is in the eye of the beholder, then one could say for example that everything is art, from the descending circles of a vulture sniffing carrion in a hot air current to a child languishing with hunger on thin skin in Africa in a photograph the size of the wall. The art could be the mountain, the shells in the sea, the sunset. But aren't we generalizing and using a kind of poorly crafted adjective by calling anything art? And if it's in the eye of the beholder (which I think makes a little more sense) it can still be problematic. We have classic examples like Duchamp and his toilet, which still carries powerful symbolism and sarcasm in a way that earns my respect, but more modern art has tended to seek the deconstruction and deformation of all concepts and organizations, but escaping the expected sense "to make you think" and entering a pretentious isolationism of being "an art so sophisticated that nobody understands and everyone pretends to appreciate".

Is this art? Why?

To me, that's art

After all this is an infinite discussion and it only depends on one's vision, I cannot claim any truth, only my opinions, and I think art is that which touches the heart, which has a potential to hypnotize and make the soul feel with intensity. May the artists and art lovers be happy.

I'm sorry, but that's not art
