This is my first post on STEM and although it took me a while to discover this network, I must say that I was happy to understand how powerful it is and how important it is, because I missed this more "study" space, many of my posts to POB might as well have shared the #STEM tag if I had understood its function earlier. Anyway, I would like to start my participation here by discussing, initially in a more open way, the use of Methylphenidate for its various purposes, but in my case with a certain focus on my particular experience with it and its results so far.
For those who don't know, Methylphenidate is the famous Ritalin. A stimulant medication used widely to primarily treat "Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder" in children and adolescents. Its use in adults has become more and more common (after all, the generations that showed greater compatibility with these diagnoses are getting older). , but living in a city with only one psychiatrist and poor quality, and even with the whole complex culture of accepting that maybe a drug is something "good" for the person, it took me a long time to find solutions. And it was only when I finally started to treat depression and chronic anxiety that the space for understanding ADHD was opened up.
Ritalin is popularly known for its reputation for helping university students to improve their potential for studies, especially during tests, exams, etc. In addition, there is a culture of substance abuse, which is not infrequently called "pharmacy cocaine" because of its similarity to it, although, when analyzed very carefully, several differences between cocaine and drug are noted. methylphenidate. There is also no consensus on whether its use is useful or not for those who do not have ADHD but just want a moment of greater intellectual and cognitive gain. This often turns out to be a mistake, given that Ritalin's most reported and proven advantages lie in its potential for focus and concentration, energy and disposition rather than in really cognitive terms. That is, it won't improve your brain, it will just make you work more fluidly with what you already have potential, and naturally, demanding more of it now and making you more "tired" the next moment. Which is a rough summary of what we call the "comedown effect", the moment when the effect passes relatively abruptly and you have a deficit of dopamine (mainly).
My experience with the substance has been very productive and positive, I use it in cycles of an average of 1 to 3 months, then I take small breaks, from 1 to 2 months. I've spent more months without too, no problems. When I'm using it, I use it daily, which clearly brings me clear benefits in terms of "work and studies". It still has some very positive effect in social terms, but somehow always strangely more related to social connections of function, like ease of talking to people at your job, or necessary negotiations with anyone. In family social terms there is not much improvement and there can even be a certain loss when you are in the "comedown" and an intense irritability takes care of you, the ideal is to avoid serious conversations with the family or with whom you live because you are a moment of instability (albeit subtle). Even though I weigh 110kg (distributed, I'm 1.84m tall and I go to the gym), I follow the traditional dose (1 tablet per time of day) and it's enough, even though I've done tests a few times of taking 2 tablets of 10mg together, and up to 3, but what you notice is a hyperstimulation that unfortunately is not pleasant for me, since I have chronic anxiety, which, if poorly managed, can turn into a crisis of anxiety and panic.
Some reports of scientific articles demonstrate varied uses of the substance, I even remember reading an article about a patient using even more than 1 gram per day of Ritalin, which is definitely an absurd dose, but supposedly for him (who had some unevenness of chronic dopamine) served with quality for their well-being (which was not necessarily related to any work or study use). Of course, this is an exception situation and you should not rely on exceptions for your own use. Ritalin, even though it is a substance rich in terms of quality and efficacy, can cause dependence and abuse, in addition to tolerance, which is the biggest problem. But given that in Brazil it is the most accessible and relatively cheap thing we have (when compared, for example, to Vyvanse), I think of it as a blessed drug that helps those who really need or know how to take advantage of its benefits without sinking into its collateral .
