Jair Naves: A maelstrom of cathartic emotions // Jair Naves: Um turbilhão de emoções catárticas
Recently I had the opportunity to see the concert of Jair Naves (or as the fans call: The only possible Jair - a joke that only Brazilians will understand) in Curitiba and I left there another person. The show was in a "inferninho" called Wonka which is probably the most amazing bar in the capital of the state where I live. The place looks like a mixture of Black Lodge (from Twin Peaks) and Laranja Mecânica in its retro-futurism aesthetic and vampiric refinements. The environment is divided into wings and floors and when we finally went down to the area where everything was going to happen I could already feel the intense atmosphere that it was going to pass, a DJ played things like La Femme and Sonic Youth to build a relaxed and numb state in those present. That day I was almost sober and stoic about any psychoactive substance, but the low atmosphere with medieval dungeon airs in blood red tones brought me a very precious torpor. Jair was walking around arranging the band's publicity materials and also setting up the musical instruments for their performance.
It wasn't long before the crowd began to gather in front of the stage and the musicians took up their instruments. What was my surprise to see them distill an incredible and powerful cathartic energy already in the first track (a bold choice even of an extremely melancholic song but that rises in an absurd crescendo) already there you could see the absurd and violent energy of Jair Naves who barely contained himself singing into the microphone, as if directing his scream to a capture device was a prison and deviated screaming in full lungs the excerpts of the song directly to the audience! Restless and completely immersed in the performance he was giving/giving/presenting to the audience, he managed to mesmerize me in a way I really didn't expect. I had seen many photos of his former band Ludovic performing with him tearing up (emotionally) on stage and in the crowd like an Iggy Pop (but better), but I couldn't conceive of that energy in real time and being delivered right there for anyone to absorb.
Catharsis is the word that best defines it. Jair is a brutal romantic, a very delicate and violently honest soul, who declares his pains and emotions, his knowledge and his stories in performances that mesmerize, that amaze the audience. I have never seen someone with such a stage presence, and I risk saying that I will most likely never see another greater. Seeing his show without knowing the lyrics well enough to sing made me watch him with an innocent and naive look at his power, but it thrilled me too much to see the audience excited, thrilled, screaming at the top of their lungs every verse of practically every track. And thanks to the intimate environment of the concert hall (the Wonka, which I mentioned) we could be with him by our side, face to face, singing and shouting from the distance of the palm of our hand, and more than once Jair hugged the audience, walked among us, surrendered to the ebb and flow of the human mass and literally got a stage-dive where it would not be possible to get. Seeing an idol materialize there (in the not dumb sense of the word, but of recognizing a heart that beats as much as yours, of seeing a man with a high power of musical composition, forming before your eyes and forever earning your affection, because he gave everything at that moment) was too exciting for me, I went to see a show and gained an extra person in my heart. And at the end of the day I could only thank each and every one of the musicians who was there, all incredible, making an unforgettable show.
Thank you for reading!
