So, I’ve been strolling around Cheltenham town, just on the edge of the Cotswolds, and I popped into this little sewing shop called The Sewing Box.

One of my go-to shops when I’m around Cheltenham, and I never miss picking up a few small things here to spark a bit of creativity.

It’s a small shop, but there are plenty of lovely choices when it comes to sewing materials.

I was drawn to this soft yarn with a beautiful colour combination. It’s made from a blend of bamboo and silk, and it’s softer and finer than regular yarns.

I decided to craft a simple headband from it, playing with the back loop and third loop to create a simple yet elegant detail.

Here’s how I made it in between tasks today, and eventually finished it.

🧶Crochet Headband

Materials

Fine to DK weight yarn

Crochet hook appropriate for yarn - I used 3 mm

Yarn needle

Scissors

Abbreviations (US )

ch - chain

hdc - half double crochet

sl st - slip stitch

BLO - back loop only

st(s) - stitch(es)

Headband

Step 1: Foundation

Chain enough stitches to comfortably fit around the circumference of your head, without twisting.

👉 Make sure the chain is snug but not tight, as the BLO stitches will add stretch.

Step 2: Body of the Headband

Ch 1
Work hdc in BLO into each stitch around.

Repeat this round until you are happy with the width of the headband.

Step 3: Finished Edge (Third Loop)

On the final round, work your hdc stitches into the third loop of each stitch instead of the back loop.

Continue merging both ends.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Working on the third loop created a clean, structured edge and encourages the band to turn up gently.

Flower Accent

Round 1
Make a magic ring
Ch 1, work 6 sc into the ring
Join with sl st

Round 2 (Petals)

(Ch 2, 2 hdc, ch 2, sl st) into each stitch around
Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing

Finishing

Attach the flower slightly off centre on the headband

Secure firmly on the back, and weave in all ends neatly.

The result is a hard-wearing yet soft and gentle headband with a floral accent.

All in all, the HDC and BLO gave the headband a nice stretch.
Using the third-loop edge adds structure and a subtle rolled finish edge, while the fine yarn enhances stitch definition and detail.
