You had no tools with you? At least the blockage could have been removed to transport the bike easier. Your next bike should be a "Waffenfahrrad" - you can take it apart and put it together with ease. When I was a kid, I rode my dad's WWII model and learned how to take it apart and put back together again. Never any problems. Checking and adjusting your brakes periodically is a must. You don't need a mechanic for that.
