Microsoft VASA-1 : Could Make the Internet Much More Dangerous
The world is getting really innovative with the technology these days. The era of technology is dominated by one aspect, Artificial Intelligence. AI is set to do a lot of man's work. From manufacturing to content creation.
When it comes to AI as a tool for content creation, although we are now able to pull of some cool video content and publish them, it's starting to get a bit scary for many.
There is an actual possibility that the Internet could soon become more dangerous than it has ever been.
Microsoft has recently announced an artificial intelligence tool called Vasa 1. Just by taking somebody’s simple photograph, stagnant picture or even their drawing, this tool can make up an entire video or song. The end results is so real that it looks almost perfectly like the person was doing the video.
- Here's a video with a bit more details about the AI tool itself and you could go YouTube and TikTok to search for more on this tool
- Also the You can click the link below to go to Microsoft's main Vasa 1 page
So now, I can go take any celebrities' photo, put it through the AI tool, get a script of my choosing and pick a voice, sync all of it and have a lifelike video of the person saying everything in the script.
The dangerous part is if we are not able to successfully make clear that it's AI generated, it could be very deceptive.
I watched a few examples of this happening on TikTok and a couple of the viewers commented saying that they felt deceived. That's how real it was.
While impressive, I find this technology very worrying and could easily be used as a weapon against anyone. The ability to create such realistic counterfeit videos might result in way too many problems. Think about somebody using this device to produce a clip in which a public figure says something he or she never uttered before. It would be spreading false information and causing much confusion.
- Privacy and Cyber bullying Problems
We're in for a load of privacy problems with tools like this. If someone is able to take an image of you, and can create a life-like video, then your image could be used in ways that you never consented to. This may greatly affect your reputation, especially when it is used for evil purposes.
Also, it can be used as a perfect tool for cyberbullying or harassment. Faking videos about an individual can damage reputations and cause suffering. The issue is that these videos are so realistic that people find it hard to determine their originality.
- Catfishing on a Whole New level
We've had lots of fraudsters set up fake accounts to deceive social media users into sending money. Imagine the tool that could make these fraudsters create any "hot girl or guy" and even be able to have the girl make videos with people. Now that would be even harder to not get deceived by right?
To be honest, I do find the technology itself as pretty awesome and innovative. However, we must be very careful how it is employed. There should be firm regulations and ethical principles put in place. So I think the organizations manufacturing such devices should focus on potential dangers that might arise from their usage and establish measures aimed at avoiding their misuse.
Yes innovation and progress is cool, but we shouldn't create a bigger weapon while trying to make a helpful tool.
But let's face it, the problem has never really been the technology or the tool, it has always been who owns or uses it. Guns aren't bad, AI isn't bad, machines are not bad it's whoever is operating it that determines what it would be used for, good or evil.
The Vasa 1 shows the amazing developments in AI but it also exposes the necessity for vigilance and responsible employment.
Mismanagement of such technology could be catastrophic towards making internet a perilous environment. Everyone must know these dangers and demand measures that protect against the abuse of this kind of power.
On Hive - LeoAI
I'm still awaiting the release of the LeoAI and what @khaleelkazi said about it was that blogs that were written with some aid from AI would show that it was AI so people don't get deceived. It would have an AI label.
I think this AI label idea needs to be taken extra seriously not just on Hive but on all social platform so that people can know for sure whether a content is AI or not.
As a newcomer on Hive, I read thoroughly about the rules of publishing content and AI was heavily frowned on.
The fear is that perhaps in the future, AI would be so good that we might not be able to tell the difference. This is why the AI Label feature is very necessary.
What do you guys think about these new content creation tools?
Does 3speak allow the use of these tools to create content or is that part of the no AI generated rule on Hive?
- Share your thoughts on this and let's discuss guys.
