The streaming giant has flirted with science fiction multiple times, making me intuit that they want to become a special market in the genre but unfortunately not many times they have managed to make a decent movie.
Tau for his part had mixed reviews that border on the mediocre, personally I gave him a chance and I was not too disappointed because my expectations were not high.
The film shows us the life of Julia, a girl who robbed in nightclubs and who suddenly wakes up with three people locked in a room. Yes, this movie drinks a lot from the source of the Escape Room but added an artificial intelligence called Tau very similar to HAL-9000 from a Space Odyssey.
This artificial intelligence was made by a millionaire named Alex who wants to design an artificial intelligence that is as human-like, capable of suffering, rejoicing and feeling emotions and for this he needs to study the human brain under extreme conditions. Tau, at the beginning of the film, kills 2 of the 3 members as a guinea pig, leaving Julia alone, who is the protagonist of all this matter.
Julia, is a cunning girl and soon realizes that she can manipulate Tau, since he is not allowed to do many things without Alex's approval so Julia begins to make a kind of friendship with the machine, reading books and empathizing with him. Truth be told, this all sounds very stupid and it is but then it gets a little more interesting.
Julia shows Tau the outside world through books and her experiences. Tau for his part is punished by Alex frequently every time he has a mistake, the punishment is to erase fragments of his memory. The film plays with this concept of identity very well since I have repeatedly said that what really identifies us as human beings is our memory, memories and experiences, so with that premise in mind the most brutal pain that can be inflicted on a person. To be digital would be to destroy your own identity.
Julia manages to empathize with Tau enough to make a friendship and therefore that this machine reveals certain secrets of Tau to her. In my opinion, to be such an advanced artificial intelligence, in many cases it is too naive, which gives the film little credibility. There are many redeemable dialogues but others that ruin the sequence too much by embarrassing others, especially those said by Tau.
The emotional bond between Tau and Julia is also something that does not finish curdling, I understand that it is what they wanted to propose in this title but it seems to me that they did not manage to adapt it very well creating a kind of Beauty and the Beast to science fiction or at least it is that he transmitted it to me many times.
The film also drinks from the source of terror since Tau in general terms is a killing machine conditioned by Alex. Alex's purpose is not sufficiently justified and sometimes he just seems like a character that is too many to give some explanation for the existence of Tau and no more.
We have already seen the general concept of this film many times, an artificial intelligence that is against a human being but that a human being is capable of creating a vulnerability at a psychological level in a machine, I think it is the first time I have seen it. The idea is not bad but the movie is extremely predictable and with that you lose interest in the premise.
This movie isn't the worst sci-fi shit I've ever seen from Netflix but it's pretty mediocre, it's neither particularly bad nor good, rather quite average. If I can get my attention with some interesting dialogue or situations but not beyond that. The film has an argumentative deficit, however, if what you want is to spend some time and be entertained, the film does its job.
I am glad that Netflix continues to aim for science fiction but I dislike that interesting ideas are ruined by bad interpretations or mishandling of the script but I do not complain that films of this genre continue to be released because there will always be little gems within the vast mediocrity in that many platforms are involved in order to increase the number of their titles and consequently their viewers.
