With the phonograph invented by Thomas Edison in 1888, Edison Gold Moulded Records were among the pioneers of reproducing sound and emanated way before the more traditional vinyl records we see DJ's bashing on their Technics 1200's today.
I managed to pick two up from a car boot sale for $25.00aud, a small price for a lot of history.
The composition of the cylinder evolved during their years of production, the first being the wax type 1986 (pictured below) which wore out after a while and were never adopted by the general public as phonographs were still in their infancy and quite expensive.
Eventually replaced by blue amberol, a more durable material, allowed for mass production and redistribution.
Pre-1910 cylinders don't show the artist name, only the song name.
In 1929, with the competition eating up his share of the market, the National Phonograph Company decided to stop the manufacture of records.
"I never did a day's work in my life. It was all fun" Edison lived by the steemit way.
