My siblings and I went to Hong Kong last April 2017. Although I can't say I was totally in charge of the itinerary, I was the one who searched a lot about where to go and what to do. Since there still wasn't any activity prepared by the travel agency on our first day, I took the initiative and decided to go to Kowloon Park because based on my initial research, there were a couple of museums around the area and there was this Avenue of Comic Stars in the park.

When we reached the place, we immediately scoured around and took pictures here and there, until a certain time where we reached the Avenue of Comic Stars.

All I thought was that I'd only be seeing those cute larger than life cartoons, but I was wrong; I was lucky enough to stumble upon a small art fair along that strip. And when I tried checking out what the arts were, one thing immediately caught my attention: Calligraphy.

I just looked at how they were doing it because such traditional art really piqued my interest, when all of a sudden they asked me if I wanted to try doing it, so without hesitation, I said yes!

And so the lessons started. I was mostly taught of the basic characters which, apparently, were still hard to do because there needed to be a certain pressure applied to the strokes. And I also learned that some (if not most) characters are actually formed based on their meanings.

Throughout the lesson, I just kept chatting with one of the instructors (unfortunately, only one of them could speak in English). He thought I was a university student in HK, and when he found out I was just a tourist on vacation, he said that it was a waste because they were always there every Sunday and during public holidays to teach Calligraphy and sell some materials related to it.

I'm not sure if the situation's still applicable now (them being there during Sundays) but I hope it is, it was indeed a fun experience learning about another culture's traditional art. And I hope that others who might go there will be able to experience doing such.

P.S. They were the ones who taught me and they were so patient and very encouraging despite the language barrier and me being such a noob :)
