Sometimes I wonder and questioned how most people think and if they have a heart because they seems so unbothered to show a little sign of appreciation for the things others do for them. It's frustrating when you help someone out over a problem that would have cost them time and money they don't even have and all you get in return is silence or a dismissive response like it didn't even matter.
You will see someone who has been helped over a problem that would have cost them at least seven days in police cell and a lot of money they would have spent to get a bail, yet all they do is to carry face like someone who stepped on poo as if you wanted to see how ugly their face could be. A common thank you won't come out from their mouth as if they suddenly became deaf and dumb.
Most people feel that because they are your relatives, they are entitled to your help without owing you anything in return. The sense of entertainment that most people sometimes display could make you think of never helping anyone again in the future. It's so absurd how a grown adult could be so insensitive to the sacrifice made on their behalf without even a word of gratitude.
I feel so bad today when I got a call to report to the police station this morning over a matter I have helped resolved for a family member last month. One of my extended family members had a case with someone over money he was owing the person and was unable to pay or refused to pay, and was arrested for debt. I helped to bailed him out and made a written agreement on his behalf as a guarantor that he would pay back the money by instalment within the next five months.
Two days ago makes it exactly one month since I helped him out, and he was supposed to pay first installment but he failed to show up, and the worse part of it is that since the day I bailed him out he hasn't even bothered to call or check on me to say thank you or ask how I am doing, let alone discuss the payment plan.
So, when the creditor couldn't reach him they called me instead and threatened arresting me if I don't get the money from him within 48 hours or pay it myself as the guarantor. This person is a young man of 23 years old who should know better than to be irresponsible and ungrateful. I am deeply disappointed in him and regrets helping him out.
Now, I am stuck in this situation where I have to chase him down to get the money or face arrest myself. Chasing after him is something that I cannot even do, because I don't even know where he currently stays and no one knows either. His call goes straight to voicemail and he doesn't respond to my WhatsApp messages.
I feel betrayed and angry for putting myself in this financial and legal risk for someone who couldn't even show the most basic gratitude or respect for what I did for him. With this experience I have vowed to never get involved in any extended family matters like this in the future no matter how much they plead or what circumstances they find themselves in because the cost of helping in this manner is just too much for me to bear; and I would rather keep my peace and protect my interest.
I have 48 hours to figure out what to do. It's either I chase him down and get the money from him or pay it myself to avoid legal consequences. Either way I am the one who loses.
$38 first installment need to be paid within the next two days, and I have no idea how I am going to manage this.
