I got a chance to catch up on a film that came out in 2016 that I have been wanting to see – Suicide Squad. It was interesting that at the thirty-minute mark the film storyline was still in character set-up and I wasn’t bored. It was an unveiling process that doled out information on each character in yummy dribbles. The strengths/weaknesses that placed them in the situations they are currently facing.

The gist of the story is a group of incarcerated super villain meta-humans are forcibly teamed up by ethically questionable government agent, Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) to face an insurmountable threat bent on bringing humanity to its knees. The villains are the perfect group for a suicide mission, they are expendable and if they don’t do what they are told to do, with a push of a button, they’re dead.

Standout characters are Deadshot (Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and The Joker (Jared Leto). Deadshot is a hired killer and who with a gun in his hand, does not miss. His weak spot is his young daughter, who he wants to protect and give a better life. He is not a white hat, he likes killing people but his story arc shows he has leadership qualities, loyalty and integrity when needed.

Harley Quinn loves The Joker and in his twisted way The Joker cares about her. Secondary plot is The Joker will not stop until Harley is free. Harley is mentally erratic but she owns what she is – one of the bad guys.

Is this a great film – no. The storyline has holes, and the editing is jumpy in not a good way. There were some good action scenes, lots of gunplay. You can tell that this is a large budget film, the video and audio are high quality. Will Smith is good as Deadshot, playing the character with conviction as a killer who may not be all bad. I loved Margot Robbie’ Harley Quinn. She is so loose and fluid in depicting this volatile homicidal character.

Overall, I liked the movie. I enjoy this genre and was able to overlook some of the story stumbles. If you like comic book movies you might enjoy this one, just don’t have high expectations. Definitely a popcorn movie.

Have you seen Suicide Squad? What did you think?
