I was surfing Netflix and I came across Beyond Skyline. The description looked interesting: “In the wake of an extraterrestrial invasion, a suspended L.A. cop teams up with survivors to stop the onslaught and rescue human captives.” As the film started I wondered if it was a sequel to a movie that I had seen ages ago called Skyline? People are drawn to a bright blue light and then are sucked up into an alien spacecraft. Yes, Beyond Skyline is a sequel and there are certain storyline points that would benefit from seeing the first movie.
The first movie was low budget and not very good.
Sequel Nutshell: Grieving, alcohol-fueled LA cop, Mark (Frank Grillo) along with his fight-prone son, Trent (Jonny Weston) are paired with a couple of unlikely companions including a subway driver, Audrey (Bojana Novakovic), when alien ships start harvesting the human population.
On the alien ship, the humans are relieved of their brains which are transplanted into alien fighter shells. Once on board the alien ship, Mark escapes with the help of one of the fighters (a carry-over from the storyline of the first movie). The fighter, who has been able to maintain his human memories, takes Mark to a hidden area where the fighter’s pregnant girlfriend is just about to give birth. She tells him the aliens are somehow accelerating the gestation process.
When she dies in childbirth, Mark promises the fighter that he will protect the baby. Mark and Audrey escape and spend the rest of the moving trying to find a way to bring out the human memories in brain transplants while protecting the baby who is growing at an alarming rate and who may be the key to saving humanity.
This movie was okay, it wasn’t great, it wasn’t horrid. The length of the film was fine. It had good action, in particular some of the fight sequences were really good and ever so slightly over the top. The character development could use some help as well as tightening the storyline. They left the ending open for another sequel which could be interesting with the set up given.
If you enjoy sci fi films, watch this film with no expectations and enjoy the popcorn.
