At the moment battle royale games seem to be all the rage. For a while it was MMORPGs, then it was MOBAs, and now it’s battle royales, with Fortnite and PUBG dominating the pack.

I don’t really mind battle royales in essence… after all, I tend to play a lot of Zombs Royale, which is a free 2D battle royale game you play in your browser. These sorts of games tend to be quick to jump into and quick to play for a little bit, making them a good game when you only want to spend a few minutes here and there playing.

The game I tend to take exception to is Fortnite. I believe it’s popular mostly because of the cartoony graphics and because some popular streamers have also helped it to become popular. The issue I have with it is the building.

Fornite wasn’t originally intended to be a battle royale game. That game mode was just tacked on after the success of PUBG. Originally the building part of the game played a central part of what the game was before battle royale and once it became a battle royale it kept that aspect.

Despite the game’s popularity I just don’t think the building feature works. You take a game that’s either about fast action or being stealthy depending on the situation, and then you drop this building feature into the middle of it where almost every time two people meet in the game they stop what they’re doing so they can build their own little forts. I think it detracts from what the game is. If people want to play a building game there are plenty of those out there.

The game might be popular and it may have made a ton of money, but that doesn’t mean it’s a good game.
