The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it. - Albert Einstein

When I saw the video on September 15th, Rodrigo Duterte said "There are 3 million drug addicts, I would be happy to slaughter them"; no one took him seriously. I was flabbergasted and I didn't take his words seriously, too.

I don't know very well the problems of Philippines. I mean tell me a country that doesn't have problems, let alone a country that doesn't have drug addicts. However, assuming that someone is likely dealing or doing drugs on the road and then killing them based on a simple profiling, it goes beyond human cruelty. It's no more different than executing a genocide.

In addition, drug addicts do not need to be killed. They are humans and they need help!

Daniel Berehulak is a photojournalist who witnessed the bloody scenes everywhere.

I HAVE WORKED IN 60 COUNTRIES, covered wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and spent much of 2014 living inside West Africa’s Ebola zone, a place gripped by fear and death. What I experienced in the Philippines felt like a new level of ruthlessness: police officers’ summarily shooting anyone suspected of dealing or even using drugs, vigilantes’ taking seriously Mr. Duterte’s call to “slaughter them all.”

Personally, I am speechless. WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO HUMANITY?

Check the photographer's work below, published in the New York Times.
