The best time to learn those survival skills is before they become necessary. Having served in the military you learn to them and you learn them well. Hopefully World War 3 doesn't drive the world back into the stone ages, but you never know. Luxury items are nice to have, but definitely not needed to survive.

It's really a shame that as people we can't all just band together and get along. Somehow we allow things like religion and government cause problems that those with the least luxuries to suffer the most...
