Stellar is giving out free lumens to new users in proportion to the number of bitcoins they own, as is Byteball. They are essentially giving money away in order to popularize the currency and increase demand.
The great thing about this is that there is already a market for these coins, particularly for Byteball, so a user could theoretically claim byteball based on existing bitcoins, cash out, claim a new account, and repeat until massive amounts free money are accrued!
