Neuralink

Neuralink is developing ultra high bandwidth brain-machine interfaces to connect humans and computers.

Preface

This is the most exciting business venture I have encountered possibly in my entire life. It's so exciting and so ambitious that if anybody but Elon Musk was at the spearhead, I would have shrugged it off as science-fiction.

Short-Future

Neuralink is first focusing on addressing mental disease such as ADHD, depression, PTSD, etc. I would expect this to occur in the next five years or more. Maybe less with adequate funding.

Long-Future

The ultimate goal (as currently represented and understood) is to bring all non self-to-self communication to the same speed as self-to-self. This is where the "ultra bandwidth" aspect comes in. Communicating with yourself, communicating with computers, and communicating with people all at the same high speeds. Right. Communicating with people and computers at the speed in which you communicate with yourself. This could subvert language, writing, even things like calling and texting, as much as the Internet subverted the postal system --- it removes its usefulness in most scenarios.

Not only would this increase bandwidth, but accuracy. You know when you have a thought, but don't exactly know how to put it in words? With Neuralink's long term goal, you don't need to put your thought into words. Words are a human invention and are not necessary for communication. Imagine a world with significantly reduced misunderstandings, more precise understanding of perspective, and complete disruption of previous communication methods. That's what I hope Neuralink is.

Conclusion

Neuralink has many hurdles to overcome, and lots of time to do it. Done properly though, this could be a way we measly humans can compete with exponentially smarter artificial intelligence.

In my next Neuralink blog post, I will discuss how Neuralink could potentially interact and compliment cryptocurrency.
