✦ We've reached a time when knowing how to sew is once again a valued skill - Collage & Edition in FotoJet, photos by @Tesmoforia ✦

🇺🇸 ~ I often hear a neighbor proudly say that she doesn’t know how to sew—“I can’t even sew on a button!”—and since I can’t imagine life without knowing how to use a needle, I don’t know how to respond to that statement.

Sewing has come back into style thanks to a renewed interest sparked by the massive number of DIY videos on social media. Many are just for entertainment and not exactly meant to educate, but they manage to grab people’s attention enough that they actively seek solutions to clothing-related problems.

✦ I've been able to work on small projects for people of all sizes and ages ✦

A while back, I started helping some people in my community by lending them my sewing machine, because school had started—and that means used and new uniforms that need mending or adjusting.

It’s also been a time for parties and charity walks, so I’ve had a long list of mini-projects of all kinds, which have served as practice to help me remember, refresh my skills, and improvise solutions ✂️ 📝 ✨

✦ An extra layer for the skirt of an evening gown; the original design was very sheer and left nothing to the imagination ✦

✦ A nightmare! A pair of tuxedo pants with some kind of super-strong adhesive that didn't allow me to access the original seams to take them in at the ankle ✦

✦ The top of a ball gown was too big, so I had to take it apart completely to turn it into a petite XXS size ✦

Some of these things are fun even if they don't seem like it—for example, the math behind the adjustments. To me, it's something very special because no two adjustments are ever exactly the same; even if two bodies are labeled as the same size, they can be very different from one another, and that calls for custom adjustments.

✦ It's kind of funny that sometimes moms have asked me to put patches in the wrong places—for example, on chemises—when the girls' jumpers are full-chested. In those cases, all I can do is laugh and wait for them to buy more patches! ✦

Other simpler tasks are almost a matter of muscle memory: unpicking, cleaning, pinning, adjusting the stitch length, and you're done. You'd be surprised how many badges I've sewn on; you quickly learn by heart a general distance to make them look perfect.

✦ I've also done a lot of invisible seams—these are my favorites ✦

✦ In this case, since these are clothes for a teenager, I made them a little sturdier than I usually do ✦

d1.jpg

✦ I've also improvised a lot; there are adjustments that require almost completely taking the garment apart, but the person asks me very late at night because they need to wear it early the next day, so there's not much I can do in that situation ✦

I always say that clothes are meant to be enjoyed, not to be a source of suffering, which is why I strongly believe that, if you want to, you should find someone who can help you make sure your clothes fit the way you’d like them to.

I don’t think it’s vanity; after all, what we wear is closely tied to what we want to express, how we want to be perceived by the world, and how we feel.

✦ 🫒 Olive green is the winner! 🫒 ✦

Some of my favorite alterations have included, for example, the case of a teenage girl who doesn’t like to show her cleavage, so she wanted to close it up with a few extra security stitches.

There was also the case of a neighbor with a very unique size, whose clothes always have a little extra fabric, and who keeps suitcases full of beautiful clothes because they all need some kind of alteration.

It’s also been nice to meet such different personalities—some people are pretty laid-back and practical, while others pay close attention to whether the color of the thread I’m going to use matches the fabric’s warp or not ( ´∀`)人(´∀` )

A season of fairly heavy rains has also begun, and the atmosphere is perfect for sewing; the days pass quietly and even lazily around here 🍵 🌔 🎐
