It has been very difficult to complete this "practice" garment but I have decided to be perseverant instead of lamenting all the unforeseen events and setbacks that have come my way; I'm worried, what is going on with this wave of health problems in such young people, I'm talking in general, not just about me! Also a strange streak of accidents of all kinds... it's too mysterious but above all worrying; I honestly just want to keep myself at home and expose myself as little as possible... you know, don't go too far, watch where you step, take things slowly.

✦ It has been a long time since I have been so passionate about studying a particular garment ✦

That said, let's get to the fun stuff, I've spent a few weeks studying how a Japanese yukata is constructed, what makes it up, what its parts are, and especially what differentiates it from the kimono and haori and other Asian garments like the hanfu.

The amount of tutorials and information available is impressive, I found explanations in all formats and different languages, but ah, finding so many different sources you also come across different types of explanations and methods. And that last one, the method, is where it has taken me the longest to decide what to do.

✦ At this stage the best conclusion I can share is that you take from each tutorial what you consider best according to your skill level ✦

✦ It is also important to say that the most important thing when you want to recreate foreign attire is to do it from admiration, love and above all respect ✦

✦ As you explore tutorial options you will see that many tutorials agree on things like armhole measurement or overall length of the yukata, but there are also variations in the measurement of the hand opening and the width of the collar ✦

Sometimes the explanations I got contradicted each other or seemed too complicated to the point that I got frustrated because I really didn't understand the order of each piece and how to sew them together (not to mention if you wanted to stick to the more traditional method that is assembled completely by hand). Finally: I decided to take a chance and stick to the old saying "less is more", so after studying so much, I decided to try the simplest method I could find, and take it as a starting point.

Throughout this first fitting I felt quite positive, little by little everything took shape and fell into its proper place. If you've worked with classic or traditional Asian garments, you'll notice that the goal of this type of clothing is that everything looks homogeneous and with clean and defined lines. Well, that's a little bit complicated to achieve if you're a Latina person (you know, we have a lot of curves, especially in the torso, so the waist is especially marked and it takes a third garment to hide... but that's more on that later!).

✦ My gift to you is this compilation of the best I found in English-Spanish in these weeks of investigation ✦

Here I will share a list of the best videos and free sites I found during my research:

✦ I apologize for censoring my face but that day I was so focused on taking the photos that I didn't realize I looked angry hahaha and I wasn't! I was very happy with that first test run ✦

✦ The fabric I used was about 3 meters of shirting fabric that I found in a box of fabrics that had been stored for many years. That's why it looks somewhat transparent, I know that for the final garment I should look for linen, silk or heavy cotton ✦

For this garment I used a piece of fabric exactly 1.50 wide x 3 meters long. All the cuts were straight and except that I had to edit 4 cm from the center or main part, I think the method works quite well. The length of the sleeves is for an everyday garment, but for my project I will have to modify the patterns to reach up to the wrists.

✦ I think I did a good job! I still need to make the waist cincher to achieve a straighter, less curvy silhouette. The armhole is in the right place and I had to raise the sleeve opening a bit ✦

The most important conclusion I can share from the beginning of this experience, is that I don't think there is such a thing as a generic size when it comes to a yukata. I say this especially for the armhole and sleeve length; I made at least about 4 attempts between sewing and unsewing before I got a silhouette that fit me well. Definitely those measurements should be customized, just like the hip measurement that determines the width of the garment.

¡Muchos abrazos! 🍵 🪷 ✨

I am very happy with the result of this "mock-up", and the next step will be to go to the fabric store to look for the ideal material, fingers crossed for me because the color and type of fabric I need is very specific and I will really cry after so much effort if I don't get the right fabrics. I'm really looking forward to it and I hope you are all well and having a safe and peaceful half of the year. Much love!!! 🍵 🪷 ✨
