In the Northern Hemisphere, it is the date of the Autumnal Equinox, which marks the official first day of autumn.
In the Southern Hemisphere, it's the Vernal Equinox, which marks the first day of spring.
I never knew that. Ironically here we often say September the 1st is the start of Autumn as there are three months to each season.
