Name two songs or pieces of music that have meant a great deal to you, defined moments in your life, made you feel happiness or great sorrow when you hear them take you back to a special moment. Explain why in each case. You can link the Youtube videos if you like.
Actually, for me, I am a lover of different genre of songs. As long as I hear it and I love it, it becomes one I listen to almost everytime as long as the vibe or atmosphere asks for it.
Earth Song by Michael Jackson
I am an ardent fan of MJ, its funny to even know that I knew about him exactly around the time he passed on. Out of all his relatively slow – at least not as fast paced like Smooth Criminal – songs, I connect more with Earth Song. As the name implies, it is a piece where MJ spoke about the different things we humans do to Mother Earth and its inhabitants including one another. From the forest to the seas to animals, the song is like an elegy which entails the series of exploitations we do to them without remorse – which I see as no conservation techniques of any sort. For example, only a few practice afforestation after cutting down trees. All these things humans do still comes back to us, take the climate change for example.
I listen to this song with deep and rapt mental attention, since I knew almost all the lyrics, I picture each line in my head and I am like “What a whole lot this guy is saying here!” I reminisce on how a façade the word "Peace" is said to exist, how the poor hopes for a better tomorrow, how the oppressed longs for independence etc. When you watch the video, you’d even get a clearer picture of what the whole song is about I'ts got pure cosmic energy embedded in it!
Some Nights by Fun
I remember I first heard this song being played by my elder brother when I was almost done with secondary school. I never knew the lyrics till early this year. How long! But I loved the way the beats, the rhythm and that “some nights are ...” just roll on. So as the universe would have it for me, I downloaded the audio and searched for the lyrics. I saw that the song was about the human feelings we have at times. Sometimes, we try to think about things like what do we live for? What do I stand for?
And most times we don’t know.
Sometimes, we wish our gruesome errors never happened due to the backlash we got from it. Sometimes, we wish we had not been friends with some people. All the way, the message always to me - to us - is that these times would always come but do not beat yourself up too much. And get back on my feet! It entails an avenue for pure reflection.
I am afraid my choice of songs may not be one that depicts happiness or sorrow precisely but they mean a lot in my life as a whole. And even they influence the situation I may find myself in. Well, maybe its because I read meaning to words (lyrics) that suits the way I see things and act on them.
