Time is precious and quite irrecoverable. We can only imagine to be able to go back in time to change things but, my dear, that can not happen. Well, maybe for now. We just have to make do with the time we have at present judiciously and correctly as possible.

Recently, I wrote about a time of my life I would not want to re-live again and it just seems as though some communities arranged to deal with time. I wrote the post, TRYING TO ERASE THAT YEAR and published it in The Weekend Community. Now, we have one from the Hive Learners’ here. Let's get to it...

Actually, there are many times I would want to go back in time to change things honestly. The one I wanted to write what quite a tragic one and I do not think I can bring myself to write it so I will settle for a cool’er one 😁. Also, since it is only for 10 minutes – that’s too much a time.

I think it was early January 2018 when I was preparing to go register for my second UTME – Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, one of the exam taken to enter into tertiary institutions generally. And yes!, you saw second. The thing was that I didn’t first the first UTME but the post-UTME exam which was for the school precisely I wanted to get admission to. It is quite some story there so lets keep it for another day. Or I could let you in a little? 🤔

The Long Story Short....

Immediately after I knew I had failed that exam, I started preparing for the next series of exams – the registration, researches etc. The previous year, I had let in my parents make decisions for me about the course I was to choose and the choice of schools. I gladly allowed them to sweet talk some things to me and I just fell for all. I believe it was the unavailability of my elder brothers at home then to advise me because they were in the system already whereas my parents have been out of the tertiary system for some decades. Even though one of the subjects – Biology - I was to take was not my strong point at all, I took it and that was the loophole that caused that failure. So that was that little story behind the first UTME.

So, as I said earlier, I started to prepare and research about school and all that. This time around I took charge of everything. Without involving anybody including my parents, I chose the course I am currently studying now – Mechatronics engineering. But what was left was the choice of university I wanted. I have two choices and was stuck between them. It was either I chose FUNAAB or FUTMINNA. FUNAAB is a university of agriculture but still offers some engineering courses while the latter was a university of technology which I believed would be and still is the more suitable for my chosen course of study. But it was quite farther from home than the former. And I wanted strongly to go to that university of technology.

I Need(ed) Less Than Ten Minutes!

You know, I said I took charge of all what pertains to the admission processes, right? Nah, I lied! Wait, before you crucify me! It was just a process, which was making the decision between the above schools. Instead of me to choose what I wanted, I took it to my parents and you know what they chose? The nearer, but for me, the less suitable one, of course. I was devastated. The only reason they gave was the distance. I knew if I had not agreed to that thought to seek my parents’ advice in a twinkle of an eye, I would have landed in the university of my choice. But you know, I had fu*ked up already by asking. *Who never did hands in the air? *

Fast forward, I passed all the required exams, got the admission and I can tell you that even though the school I am in currently are trying in the course, I believe they still do not match up to FUTMINNA. And I still do some research on the school and I see the marvelous things they do. Well, that pain had gone though but I consoled myself such that if I was to do my Masters’ degree in Nigeria, it must be in FUTMINNA. If I was to do it in Nigeria, cos I don’t plan to!

Silver Lining?

Still, I do not beat myself up for that. I am doing well in my school both academically and in other things, though I may not be among the very best but I am trying. Who knows? If my glorious want had happened, maybe I won’t be on Hive. Maybe I would not have met some of my good friends especially monioluwa@monioluwa, my Gee – he was the first person I knew in my school physically after got the admission. So, I guess it was a matter of fate! And there are reasons for everything too!
