The son of former Cuban leader Fidel Castro, Fidel Ángel Castro Díaz-Balart, has committed suicide at age 68, state media reports. He's said to have received months of treatment for depression at the time of suicide.
The nuclear scientist, also known as “Fidelito”, or Little Fidel, because of how much he looked like his father, had initially been hospitalised and then continued treatment as an outpatient.
At the time of his death, he was a science adviser to Cuba’s Council of State and vice president of the Academy of Sciences of Cuba.
As much as the death itself may shock ordinary Cubans, it was those unexpected circumstances which caught them by surprise.
