I have skimmed over any in deep details of my life because one this is social media but two I been feeling around and getting my feet wet in the waters. But after hang out with @ladyvinci yesterday and reminiscing. I know enough times has gone by I can tell this story without anyone getting arrested. And though technically what went on here was and in our state still a crime this story ended 19 or 20 years ago when some people who couldn't get along didn't sign the check to pay the mortgage and we lost our community place.
This is the story about the Spiritual Foundation of the Arcadian Order or better known around our parts as the "Church" There are a few organizations with that name if you use google but you won't find information about this one on there. It was a different type of community. It was a diverse community of all religions and beliefs and non beliefs. The one thing we all believed in and still do is that Marijuana is a plant that should be used. We would come together for discussions about everything and anything. We would collaborate on ideals and organize all kinds of events and parties.
There was was event called Wombat it was unreal, those Hollywood movies had nothing on our parties. We had people coming from 4 states away. It was an unreal time and an amazing experience. Back in the mid 90's Ball State was ranked as one of the number 1 party Universities in the United States, the Church was the reason why. We hosted the parties in a safe place
@ladyvinci show this to your husband as I recall he was in Peanutbutter Headphones back then. This party ended up having over 5,000 people that attended it. And all the ideas and collaborations happened here. We even got a school bus second hand and painted it up to be the Wombus, and painted on the side Wombat Bands, Beer and your Best Buds (yes that last one was a double sided pun)
But more than the parties we organized to restore the church, You can't see the improvements from the boarded up church photos but we spend thousands of dollars and hours restoring the building to a usable space. It was a space for artists, thinkers, much much more. It was a community that had each other's back, if you didn't have a place to stay you could sleep on a couch at the church.
Any day of the week you could walk and and find people playing Magic the Gathering or Dungeons and Dragons, or creating art or music or discussing religions and beliefs. And we did our part to try to legalize marijuana and at least educate people that the propaganda was not true. Now that you know a little back story I can also share this. Every week everyone would save their roaches from their joints all week and on Sunday they would bring them to the church and we would have what we dubbed "Roach Sunday". We would come together and roll our roaches and share them and get baked.
Everything was great but then there was issues with those in charge and because of their personal issue everyone suffered and it was too late to do anything when the community found out, because we didn't find out till the bank seized it. Which in many ways divided the community, some took some peoples side over the others but it was equally all three of them. Though one was more responsible then the others.
Many us have grown up from those party days but the one thing many of us miss is the community aspect that we had there, the collaboration that went on, and the things we were able to accomplish, and man did we accomplish a lot. Many of the things that started as an idea there has enriched my hometown. And for me and a few hundred other mover and shakers of the community the church shaped their lives and made them the person they have become today.
There are so many mini stories to tell about this place, but not enough time in one day or post to tell you about it all. If you like this story and want to hear more about the Church Upvote this post if there is enough interest I might do a series on it and possible get some of the colorful people to agree to allow me to spot light them that I have met there.
