Good Morning, keeping with my habit of sharing a few mono shots to start the week and after some news i heard recently i decided to go with some shots of some of the animals at our local New Bedford Zoo in BUttonwood park.
Recently the Zoo has had some sad news to report, first that Ruth, a 66-year-old year Asian elephant who has called New Bedford home for the last 38 years had passed away, it wasnt unexpected as they had reported recently that she was not in good health and would go into hospice care
Then just a few days ago more sad news, Blue a 21 year oldf Harbor sela had passed away, Laboratory testing confirmed that Blue, died of complications from Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), or avian flu. The zoo said he likely contracted the disease from a wild bird.
ITs been a tough time for the workers at the zoo for sure, I know I have at times said its a small zoo and some of the enclosures could be larger, but from the interactions I have had with quite a few of the zoo staff on my visits there, they seem to truly care about the health and welfare of the animals.
I didnt include any photos of Ruth or blue in this post, but this post is in memory of them in a way
Starting with one of the bison, I'n not sure if they name the bison
