Hello friends of hive today we continue with the last part of our story of 20 Year at sea part 3/3.
Hola amigos de hive hoy continuamos con la ultima parte de nuestra historia de 20 Year at sea part 3/3.
It was the year 1980, we had to go to South America, specifically to the port of the city of Maracaibo in Venezuela, one afternoon in July past noon we passed under the gigantic bridge that the city has that connects one state with another, we disembarked in said port. Exhausted by the long trip, we decided to find a hotel and go out to the city where it was infernally hot. I was definitely captivated by its people and its food, the tastes and the beer, although we would only be there for a couple of days because we would visit another port in the same country a little further west.
We left for the coast of Puerto Cabello, which would be a stop that would change my life without knowing it, we arrived at the port but due to logistics problems we disembarked very late, with the intention of leaving and getting off the ship. Here the weather was a little cooler, a Caribbean breeze, warm sea and a very beautiful view.
We left the boat looking for a party and liquor as always, we arrived at a very nice bar, the receptivity of the people was incredible and their energy and love was something I had never felt before. Between drinks and dancing the night passed, beautiful women laughed and deep down my body felt at home being very far from her, something that left me thinking when I returned to the ship's cabin, the next day I told my friends on the ship that this port had something specific that others did not have, they thought that I had fallen in love with some woman but in this case I had fallen in love at first sight with the city.
The next day, while I was in the port and the machines were unloading the ship's holds, a person who owned the company where we were unloading in Venezuela approached me and told me "Greek, I like how they work, I need people like that here." It was like a sign, I felt at home, at peace as if I belonged to this place, I went to talk to my captain and told him that I would disembark at the port, that I would stay, my unbelieving friends laughed and told me I was crazy, two days later I saw how my ship sailed, it was my last trip so I decided.
43 years later, I am still here in Puerto Cabello, on the other side of the world from my main home, but this land makes me feel alive and its streets, history and people made me fall in love, today I have two daughters and a Venezuelan wife, with whom I travel to many parts of the world and take them to my homeland in Greece.
It was 20 long years at sea, good days, bad days, but endless history in between. I managed to take more than 1,000 photos in those years, always with my camera and nurturing myself with experiences.
