Monuments in the Alexander Garden

These photos were taken a year ago, in April 2019.

Four monuments stand around a fountain in the Alexander Garden near the Admiralty: a monument to the writer N.V. Gogol, a monument to the poet M. Yu. Lermontov, a monument to composer M.I. Glinka and a monument to diplomat A.M. Gorchakov.

Monuments to Gogol, Lermontov and Glinka were erected at the end of the 19th century, in 1896 - 1899. The fourth monument to the literary critic V.G. Belinsky was scheduled. They decided to postpone the opening of this monument for several years, so that it coincided with the 100th anniversary of the writer. As a result, the project was never implemented.

100 years later, in 1998, another monument was unveiled at this place - a bust of a Russian diplomat, Prince Alexander Mikhailovich Gorchakov. Gorchakov has a very interesting biography. In particular, he was educated at the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum, where he was a friend of the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. He was the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry under Alexander II.
