If you haven't heard, there is a rumor out there that Steemit was sold to Justin Sun. He is the founder of TRON.

There are a couple other sites that have since picked up the story which is about 5 hours old. None, as far as I can tell, are what we would call mainstream crypto sites. Thus far, nothing is on Coingecko which tends to link articles from most of the major crypto sites.
That said, would anyone be surprised?
It is no secret that Steemit Inc was having financial difficulties. They were in survive mode at the beginning of the year and were able to reduce that exposure. However, the fact that they keep selling STEEM to pay their bills show that, in spite of adding advertising, it was not enough of a revenue generator. This is also not surprising since Steemit.com is not exactly a top 500 website.
If this is, indeed, true, what does it all mean?
Steemit Inc is behind all development on the blockchain. Of course, purchasing Steemit Inc (which also means Steemit.com) is not purchasing Steem. Steemit Inc is a private company with it owns share structure and owners. This has nothing to do with the token other than the fact that Steemit has a ton of the stake.
That said, there are a lot of projects in the works, a few major ones. We know SMTS and Communities are in testing phase. How will this affect those? Justin Sun is behind TRON, does this mean he will shift the resources there?
It is hard to tell what will happen if the reports are true. It might be that nothing major changes other than Steemit gets access to something Sun has: money. Perhaps we see a blending of the two blockchains since interoperability is something that the industry desperately needs.
In the end, I think we need to be reminded that Sun's loyalty is with TRON. Him buying out the principles behind Steemit means he is going to incorporate that into his blockchain. How it all fits remains to be seen.
One thing Sun does bring to the table is name recognition. Good or bad, he is well known. It also places a dynamic figure who would them be associated with Steemit. Again, whether this is a good or bad thing is unknown but it would change things.
