It certainly is helpful if they are genuine comments that add to the conversation or article.

Yes the bullcrap comments of "nice post, thank you" is spam and worthless. However, engaging with people in the comment section, either by commenting on the article or on the comments of others is perfectly acceptable.

So I would not worry about "spamming" as long as you are engaging. That is of great help to the platform.
