Sam Altman is an American entrepreneur and investor best known as the CEO of OpenAI, where he became one of the central figures in the modern AI boom. Born in 1985, he grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, showed an early interest in technology, and attended Stanford University before dropping out to build startups. His first major company was Loopt, a location-based social networking app, which he co-founded and later sold.

After Loopt, Altman became deeply influential in Silicon Valley through Y Combinator, the startup accelerator he led as president from 2014 to 2019. There he helped shape the careers of countless founders and became known for spotting ambitious, high-conviction ideas early. In 2019, he became CEO of OpenAI, putting him at the center of the race to build and commercialize advanced AI systems.
