It appears that Tesla, Hyperloop, Space X, and Boring company are not enough for Ole Elon. He now has his sites set on the Internet itself with his latest venture. Starlink.
Musk is going to blanket the planet with 4,000 satellites to provide global internet service. It seems there is a method to Elon's madness. Space X is the ideal delivery system to get his satellites airborne providing this service at 1/3 the cost of ULA.
One little discussed topic in all of this is the fate of the cable companies. Traditionally these entities are the lowest ranked in customer service since they charge high fees without much concern for their quality of service. In most markets, people have one, maybe two choices for service. Even cutting the cord has a healthy cost considering that Internet service is almost a requirement these days.
I sense that when we get global Internet coverage, the cable companies will be in deep trouble. Few people have loyalty to them and, I believe, will jump first chance they get. Couple this with the fact that Richard Branson and Qualcomm are planning to launch over 900 satellites by 2019 for the same purposes means that there will be two companies to disrupt the cable industry. Then, you might see the cord cutting begin in earnest.
