We Talk Friday
(WTF)
This is a semi-regular series that I will run on Fridays to hold discussions on a current topic from the week gone. The aim is to keep them light and conversational, though some might be heavier - regardless of the content topic itself though, just have some fun engaging and discussing with whoever happens to put in the effort in the comments section below.
1. Sunday Best
The alcohol monopoly held by the government will have some shops open on a Sunday for the first time ever. In Finland only beers and wines up to 8% are able to be sold in supermarkets, and they can only be sold to 9pm at night. Anything with a higher percentage has to be bought through the monopoly shops. What I find interesting is that there are still people who believe that increasing access hours will lead to a surge in drinking problems. You know what creates dependency problems?
Shitty lives that lack opportunity.
Perhaps people should start working on improving society and community instead.
2. Washed Away
I was reading a story about a celebrated Australian footballer (Aussie rules) who will likely have the statue of him at an oval torn down, after he was convicted of domestic violence. He retired twenty seven years ago. The statue went up because his success at sport, not at life. So, what has his private life today have to do with his sporting prowess from decades ago?
Should our best days be washed away because of our worst?
3. Green and Old
How is it that Australia does so poorly at penalty shootouts? The game against Egypt wasn't their greatest display, but they had opportunities even if Egypt controlled most of the game. Not sure it was the right decision to swap the goalie for the shootout either, or have the 18 year old shoot, though I guess there were a lot of learning experiences to be had. Another four years...
