We Talk Friday
(WTF)
This is a semi-regular series that I will run on Fridays to hold discussions on a current topic from the week gone. The aim is to keep them light and conversational, though some might be heavier - regardless of the content topic itself though, just have some fun engaging and discussing with whoever happens to put in the effort in the comments section below.
OOPS! I haven't written a WTF in a few weeks!!!! It was meant to be semi-regular, but I was enjoying it being pretty regular but with the vacations and whatnot, it slipped away from me. But I am back at it - at least this week.
1. Sun Never Sets
While in northern parts of Finland the sun really doesn't set, the saying is "the sun never sets on the Commonwealth" because the empire was so large and so global. What is interesting, is that despite being much smaller now, it is supposedly still true, that the it is still always daytime somewhere in the common wealth. Why do I bring this up? Because the Commonwealth games are on in Scotland in the moment. Yes - you heard me right.
And still no one cares about those games....
Time to sunset them?
2. What the Tariff
Trump has been back at it again, applying tariffs to countries willy-nilly with no rhyme or reason. When do you think the rest of the world will wake the fuck up and start taxing US service businesses where they earn their income? It would more than offset the loss of income from US sales and would cut the heads off the hydra that is US service business, and give space for non-US businesses to fill.
3. For the Love of the Game
Le Bron James has named his new team, moving over to the 76ers on the most impressive contract of his career. In fact, it is worse than his rookie contract, which was 13M over three years between 2003 and 2006. Not that it was a bad deal if adding on his 7-year Nike contract which was worth 87M. But, his new contract is the minimum for a veteran player in the NBA, coming in at 8M over two years. This is someone who is a 22-time Allstar.
He doesn't need the money.
He does want another championship.
At 41 years old, he is still going strong, even if well past his prime. So far, has has won a title with every team he has played with - but can he win a fifth?
4. Blow Me Sideways
To blow a raspberry, lightly press your tongue between your slightly parted lips and blow air out forcefully.
The term "blowing a raspberry" has nothing to do with the fruit. It originated as Cockney rhyming slang in 19th-century East London. The phrase is a shortened version of "raspberry tart," which rhymes with "fart". Because the mouth noise mimics the sound of flatulence, it became known as blowing a raspberry.
Did you know that?
