Sunday is meant to be more of a rest day, but with Smallsteps 10th birthday party for her friends scheduled, it was all systems go. We keep these things pretty low-key when we can, but my wife had access to a work pool and sauna area and we decided it would be a good way to go out with a bang. After this, the larger birthday parties with random friends will be replaced with smaller things with close friends only.
Smallsteps had such a great time!
As did her friends.
We kept food simple with tubs of ice cream and toppings, candy, chips and popcorn, and then off to the pool and sauna (for the kids) - with my wife, myself and a volunteer mother (of her best friend) playing lifeguard. Even though there were 17 loud and enthusiastic kids (a few cancellations) they behaved themselves and were of course disappointed when they had to get out of the pool and change. However, they were happy that they could get more ice cream, until parents dribbled in to pick up their kids, some staying for a chat and a look around.
Due to a bit of a key mix-up, our neighbours couldn't take Puusti the dog out, but our lifesaver mother did the honours and we dropped her kid home, along with flowers and ice cream for their family. The only issue with this was that we had a plan after cleaning up the space to stay for a swim and sauna ourselves, but we didn't get to. Not the end of the world, but it would have been a nice way to end the evening.
Clean up
Still, Smallsteps was super happy with how everything went and also that her friends enjoyed it, with no dramas and everyone included enough. As while the majority all come from her current school (all the girls in her class were invited), several came from her previous school and one came from her day care - her best friend.
Even though she was hopped-up on sugar, Smallsteps thanked her mum for organising it (and me in an afterthought comment), and thinks it was a roaring success. Which is good, because she isn't having another party for a while!!! Really though, it was nice to see her so happy during the day and carrying that good feeling with her into the evening. How long that will last, who knows.
But a good day was had, and will hopefully be remembered.
