I think that part of the problem is that in many areas, there just aren't enough Steemians to gather. For example, I do not know anyone in my city of 300k who I could meet. However, I have met with a few Finns from other places and, I have had some visitors drop by recently for a few days.
One of the issues on Steem is that (perhaps because of reward and open wallet) people don't tend to invite their actual friends, it seems like many are protective or embarrassed of their time here.
But then at the same time, perhaps this is part of the problem with not buying in as many might feel that inviting others in will dilute their chances to earn from the pool.
Well, I am optimistic about Steem's future in many ways, even though it is unlikely to satisfy any individual's expectations of what it should be. I do think that pretty much anyone could enjoy themselves here if they spend time forgetting reward and looking for interesting places to play.
