After being gone all day for midsummer celebrations, here are some of the collected photos. It was a nice day, starting off around 1pm and straight into grilling both beef and pork steaks, cheese-filled mushrooms, salad and new potatoes - and eating until stuffed.
After a small pause outside doing tasks...
I made my first vasta/viita (sauna whip made out of birth leaves), and the girls picked wild flowers and made wreaths to wear.
We had dessert.
And then an impromptu "Olympics" set up by the kids, with a ball kick into a bucket, lawn darts (dart board on the ground), frisbee golf throw, and of course, the Finnish classic - rubber boot toss. It was close, but I took out the event. So I have found my competitive advantage - being okay at useless things.
My wife's first boot throw went into a tree, and didn't come down.
Dessert was soon followed by sauna where my wife and I went, and then the kids after while we prepared dinner - burgers. I gotta say, there was a lot of eating today, and it was great. In some way, this feels more like Christmas to me, than the traditional Finnish one. Family in the sun, playing games, eating good food.
I also swam a couple times in the lake tonight between sauna shifts, and the water there was warm enough.
Winter coat gone.
We didn't get home until just before the USA- AUS game started, so while watching I edited these photos a little to make them presentable. As far as the game went, USA won, but I don't really think either team did themselves proud and the last quarter of the game was a tragic mess. It was amateur hour at that point.
But hey, at least my stomach is still full.
And now I will head to bed and if the weather is as warm as promised (25°C - 77°F) tomorrow, we might head to the lake beach for the first time this summer.
And no... I didn't forget the pictures...
