Smallsteps and I went to the Italian Market last year, but it was far better this year since they changed the location back to the actual market square in the centre of the city. The market itself wasn't that great, but there was some awesome pizza, some tiramisu and of course, an aperol spritz for my wife. The first time she had one was in Venice on our honeymoon in Italy.
There was a bouncing castle 8that wasn't very bouncy) in the shape of the colosseum for the kids and Smallsteps gave it a go, but she is post that point in her life perhaps - though she keeps on trying to hold on to it. At some point she will realise that she can move on, but she has to come to that conclusion by herself.
There was a dancing event there and a couple of our friends were giving classes, which is part of the reason we went so we could see them. And since the weather was so great with the sun shining and warm, the atmosphere inside the market area felt a bit like stepping outside of Finland for a moment. While my wife and I were dancing, our friends walked by and then we sat with them for a while talking about how strange it felt compared to the normal milieu.
And for me, it was very different than the rest of my day, as I was in the basement cleaning, vacuuming and then painting, starting with the stairs. The concrete isn't in good condition, so it isn't going to look flawless, but it will be better. And with the paint we are using, I have to lay a thinned coat first and let it dry for a day before doing the top coat. The thinned paint works like a sealer, and it fills the cracks and gaps.
I am a bit worried about the old paint.
I am really, really hoping that it doesn't set up some strange reaction and either bubbles the new paint or stops it curing properly. That would suck. But, I have to risk it and the paint we are using is likely the best one that will cover over most things okay.
While I have to carry on with it tomorrow, it was a really nice change of pace in the evening and it made it feel more like a holiday. I think summer holidays feel better when there is a mix of work and leisure, because it feels earned. Walking around the market with a glass of wine in hand, listening to the music and seeing a few thousand people enjoying themselves for once, with smiles on their faces, didn't feel like Finland.
Coming home to paint fumes was a good reminder of where we are.
