Tonight my wife and I attended a charity event that employs and improves the lives of women living in Kenya. I am close to the owner of the charity and she has worked hard to get it up and running and promoting it over the last year. Tonight was the first official birthday since its launch but it took much longer to get it operational.
One of the performances of the night was a local band that was founded in 1976, Eppu Normaali and they played a decent gig. I do not know much of their music and it is all in Finnish, but it is nice to see that they pretty much rocked it and there were 20 year olds singing along with every word.
My wife loves this band but had never seen them live until tonight. She was introduced to the music by her brother-in-law as it was his favorite band. He passed away 14 years ago today from cancer and two of the songs played tonight were also played at his funeral. He left behind two children, the youngest of which will celebrate his graduation from high school tomorrow.
While this band might mean very little to me, it meant a lot to her to finally see them live. Music can play a very important role in our experience as we tend to attach events to the sounds we hear, and often at the highs and lows, we connect with different types of music that really do become the soundtracks of our life.
I know that for me, I hear a few bars of music in the background and memories from years gone arrive on the doorstep, good and bad times, hard times, loved times. Music is something that even while heard, is rather meaningless until felt.
