Life is complex and it can't easily be reduced to right or wrong. I'm part of the people who think that there's really no right or wrong answer. It just depends on the context or the perspective you look at it from.
Negotiation and arguments in general are political to a large extent although we like to reduce it to mere logical reasoning. I could have the line of credit to take out a loan from the bank but if I don't influence or persuade them to see my viewpoint then I might never get that loan. That's a reality in this part of the world.
The world would be much more 'organized' if everything was based on logical reasoning but alas, it is only a part of the equation and it's influence on the outcome is minimal in many cases. We are by and large illogical beings who think they're acting logically.
I Love Practicality
However, when it comes to hard truths, there is a need to be right. In fact, it is necessary. Because, being wrong could be very fatal. An example is in the military or hospital. I knew of a person who was sick and went to the hospital but was given the wrong medicine that lead to her death. Now the family is undecided whether they should sue the government or not.
One party said it is God's will while the other believes it is unacceptable and those in charge should pay the consequences for what they have done. The interesting thing is that they're both right, they just defer in their arguments. They could do both by accepting that it is God's will and also making sure that these kind of things don't happen again. It being God's will doesn't mean they should let it go.
In all honesty, these things are easily preventable if we stop letting inexperienced individuals with 'insufficient cooking' taking charge of leadership or managerial positions. In this day and age, anybody can be smart but wisdom only comes with age.
There is much value in apprenticeship and many of these people have few to none of it. Hence, insufficient cooking. Don't get me wrong, being self taught is great but it tends to be one sided and not really battle tested. You could be doing a slight error efficiently.
That's why I believe practicality trumps theory. I like to see theory as a guideline. It's not the real thing. That one can only be experience through practical and you need to be right because hard rules aren't easily adjustable. Some will say they're never adjustable.
