Without much preparation, I think we all did well in our performance in our activity in Kontekstuwalisadong Komunikasyon Sa Filipino.
Our activity is about performing the types of chismis or gossip in one play. Chismosa is known here in the Philippines. You can see people in the street gossiping, and you can definitely see anyone gossiping everywhere and anytime. It is one of our cultures that we adopted when we were colonized by the Spaniards before; we used gossip to relay information or to learn information without the Spaniards knowing.
Chismis is one of our lessons for our course Kontekstuwalisadong Komunikasyon Sa Filipino, and to deeply understand what chismis is, our professor wanted us to showcase how it is done. Gossip is used to communicate; it can be seen in schools, offices, streets, etc. One more thing: even debate is considered gossip.
We were grouped into four. Thankfully my groupmates are very good at acting since they don't get shy in front when performing, so what I did was use that opportunity to showcase their capabilities and to have the best performance and context out of all groups.
Our theme is gossiping about a co-worker who we think got pregnant by an anonymous man. And the other group is also about pregnancy. Why do you think almost all of the group is considering pregnant women as their topic? Well, in the Philippines, the best gossip is pregnancy, especially teenage pregnancy, because some thought that not being pure is bad and lewd, more especially if the person who got pregnant is poor.
When I arrived at school, I found my classmates really funny; they were all ready, wearing their costumes, and they also brought props for their roleplay. My group will perform lastly, so I was able to entertain myself with my classmates performance while we were also getting ready. I found myself laughing every second because of each performance; they were all so into their characters, like they're true marites or chismosas (gossipers).
The first group performer was doing a radio drama; therefore, they don't need to wear any costumes, but they are using props. For me, they need to put more emotion and use a lot of sound effects and music, but all in all, their performance has a good storyline.
The second group performer was ultimately funny because they were making their own dialogue, and I also loved their expressions. One thing is that there are a lot of pauses, mainly because they sometimes have to think about their dialogue.
The third group was also funny; I really loved their props, which were coffee and bread that you could see Filipinos eat during the morning while having a little bit of gossip about someone. Though I think their storyline needs more improvement, all in all, it was very interesting.
Then the last performer was us. Of course, since we practiced once, our performance went smoothly, though there are times that we can't help but laugh. We also had an issue because one of our members did not arrive; therefore, we had to perform without her. Thankfully my members were so into their character and did well in their acting. For me, our performance was really funny, though our professor did not understand the last scene of our performance, but we made him understand the last scene, and he was amazed.
We took turns commenting on each other's performance before our professor told us about our scores. And guess what? We gained the highest score, so I was really happy and thankful because even though we did not prepare much and only practiced once, we still did great.
It really made my day, and I learned a lot about each performance.
Looking back at our performance it was truly enjoyable, fun and interesting. From just an activity it turned out to be one of the activities that I truly enjoyed. Seeing my classmates act like a true marites was really funny and I realized that gossip, whether good or bad, is truly a big part of our Filipino culture.
Winning the highest score made everything even better for me, but more than that, I was really happy because I got to have fun with my classmates, we share some laughter, and learn something new together. This activity reminded me that sometimes, even when things aren’t planned perfectly, they can still turn out amazing. I will always remember this day as one of the best thing of our semester.
